Inquiry Targets MEPs at St. Petersburg Economic Summit
The European Parliament is investigating its members who took part in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, an event attended by Vladimir Putin. Parliament President Roberta Metsola has asked the disciplinary committee to review the conduct of Luxembourg MEP Fernand Kartheiser, who presented a document in Russia claiming to speak on behalf of European lawmakers. The declaration discussed prospects for restoring EU-Russia relations but made no mention of Moscow’s war against Ukraine.
Parliamentary leadership is looking into whether Kartheiser properly disclosed all interactions with Russian officials and complied with rules on reporting trips funded by third parties. If violations are found, he could face penalties including fines or a temporary ban from representing the Parliament at international events. Metsola stated that the document contains statements that raise serious concerns, as it could create the impression of an unofficial communication channel between the European Parliament and Russia’s State Duma.
Romanian MEP Also Under Scrutiny
Romanian lawmaker Diana Șoșoacă may also face review, with her case potentially being taken up by the disciplinary committee next week. Șoșoacă traveled to Russia at her own expense. In response to the investigation, she said:
“This would be groundless. Russia is not a forbidden country, and no one can stop us from going there or attending international platforms.” - Diana Șoșoacă
This situation highlights the complexity of international relations and the ethical dilemmas surrounding European lawmakers’ participation in events held in a country that is under EU sanctions and criticism. These developments come against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine and heightened tensions between the European Union and Russia, making the probe particularly timely.
The scrutiny faced by MEPs regarding their interactions with Russia underscores broader concerns about political accountability in Europe.
