The European Parliament's Decision

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has announced that the European Parliament has given its consent to the convention establishing an International Compensation Commission for Ukraine. This move comes alongside the adoption of a resolution aimed at ensuring accountability and justice in response to Russia's attacks on civilians in Ukraine.

'I am grateful to the European Parliament for today's decision to approve the convention on the creation of the International Compensation Commission for Ukraine.' Andrii Sybiha

The minister emphasized that this commission will play a crucial role in upholding the principles of fairness and responsibility, ensuring that victims receive proper compensation for damages caused by Russia's unprovoked aggression.

The Urgent Need for a Special Tribunal

Sybiha also stressed the importance of rapidly establishing a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine: 'The swift creation of a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine remains absolutely necessary.'

He noted that Ukraine will continue to work closely with the European Union and its member states to achieve a just and lasting peace for the country and the entire European continent.

The European Parliament's decision to set up the International Compensation Commission marks a significant step toward delivering justice for those affected by the war. It underscores the international community's commitment to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to recover and obtain compensation for the harm inflicted. Furthermore, the establishment of a Special Tribunal could become a key milestone in holding those responsible for crimes of aggression accountable, thereby strengthening the legal framework for protecting human rights and international humanitarian law in the region.

In light of the European Parliament's recent endorsement of the International Compensation Commission, it is vital to consider how this aligns with Ukraine's legislative efforts. Just days ago, Ukraine’s Parliament ratified a similar convention, marking a significant stride towards securing justice for victims of the ongoing conflict. This coordinated approach highlights the importance of international collaboration in addressing the repercussions of the war.
