European Parliament to Hold Emergency Session on Fourth Anniversary of Russian Invasion

Європейський парламент збирається на надзвичайне засідання в день четвертої річниці агресії Росії.

Emergency Session of the European Parliament

On the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the European Parliament will convene an emergency plenary session on February 24th. This session comes as intense fighting continues, with a significant surge in combat activity reported in recent days. The war, which began on February 24, 2022, at 04:00, has entered a new phase marked by relentless military engagements and attacks.

Over the past day, 153 combat clashes were recorded. Invading forces launched two missile strikes, firing 72 missiles in total. The enemy's activity also included 38 airstrikes, which involved dropping 148 guided aerial bombs. Furthermore, the aggressors deployed 7,887 kamikaze drones and carried out 3,911 artillery bombardments of military positions and settlements, 46 of which were from multiple launch rocket systems.

Military Actions and Their Consequences

A particularly notable event was a massive combined air assault by Russian forces on the night of February 3rd, which involved 562 air attack assets. The total estimated cost of this single strike was $324.8 million, exceeding the cost of a major bombardment on January 20th by over $190 million.

The types of weaponry used in these attacks included:

  • Iskander ballistic missiles
  • RM-48U missiles
  • 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missiles
  • 3M55 Onyx missiles
  • Kh-101 cruise missiles
  • 9M728 Iskander-K missiles
  • Kh-32 missiles
  • Geran and Harpy strike drones

I am proud to announce that on February 24, the European Parliament will convene an extraordinary plenary session to honor the courage of the Ukrainian people.

Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament

The European Parliament's emergency session on the invasion's anniversary underscores the EU's deepening institutional support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict. This high-level recognition of Ukrainian resilience and discussion of the war's status is seen as a crucial step in maintaining international solidarity and shaping future measures to address the crisis. The session serves as a powerful political symbol of Europe's commitment as the war enters its fifth year.
