EU’s Financial Support Strengthens Ukraine’s Defense
The European Union is set to provide Ukraine with €3.3 billion to fund the purchase of missiles and drones, announced European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Additionally, the European Commission revealed plans to allocate remaining funds from the SAFE mechanism to support new collaborative defense initiatives with Ukraine.
Just last week, the EU approved financing for Patriot missile systems as part of a loan package to aid Ukraine. So far in 2024, the European Union has mobilized nearly €15 billion in support for Ukraine. Looking ahead, there are plans to develop a European air and missile defense system based on Freya technology, which will be built in cooperation with Ukraine.
"Last week, we approved EU funding for Patriot systems as part of our loan to support Ukraine. However, this is clearly not enough," said Ursula von der Leyen.
