Family benefits play an important role in preventing child poverty in Europe, but government spending per person varies significantly across countries. According to Eurostat data, the difference between the highest and lowest figures can be as much as 80 times.

In 2022, EU countries allocated an average of 830 euros per person for family benefits, which is 47% more than in 2012. However, the differences between countries are enormous. Spending on family benefits per person in the EU in 2022 ranged from 211 euros in Bulgaria to 3789 euros in Luxembourg.

Overall, family benefits are highest in Northern and Western Europe and lowest in Southern and Eastern Europe. Following Luxembourg in the ranking are the Scandinavian countries: Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and Finland.

Interestingly, over the past 10 years, the largest increase in family benefit spending has been demonstrated by Central and Eastern European countries, led by Poland. The Scandinavian countries and France also exhibit a high level of spending in this area. Experts emphasize that comparisons between countries require caution, as each country has its own characteristics and political considerations.

Family benefits in Europe play a significant role in protecting children from poverty; however, the level of spending in this area varies greatly among countries. Some countries, such as Luxembourg or the Scandinavian states, spend significantly more on family benefits than other European Union countries. However, recent years show that some Central and Eastern European countries, such as Poland, are also actively increasing their spending in this area.
