The neutral Russian skier has been recognized as an athlete without nationality
The International Ski Federation (FIS) has recognized Russian skier Daria Nepryaeva as a neutral athlete. According to information from FIS, Nepryaeva received her neutral status due to her illegal stay in Crimea during the summer of 2022, where she participated in training camps.
Together with other Russian skiers, she illegally crossed the border of Ukraine, bypassing customs and border control. Now Nepryaeva has the opportunity to qualify for the 2026 Olympics, which will take place in Italy from February 6 to 22, 2026.
“Participation in such events is a gross violation of the IOC's recommendations regarding neutral athletes”
In addition, Russian speed skater Aleksandra Sayutina has received neutral athlete status from the International Skating Union (ISU). Sayutina attended the annual address of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Federal Assembly, which she shares on social media. In the president's address on February 29, 2024, the athlete's presence was also noted.
Skier Veronika Stepanova posted a photo on Instagram of Sayutina's participation in a propaganda event. During the live broadcasts of this event, other associates of Putin and Russian military personnel who participated in the conflict in eastern Ukraine can be seen.
As a result of the illegal visit to Crimea in 2022, Russian athletes received neutral status, which gave them a chance to qualify for the 2026 Olympics, but this move sparked controversy and violated the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee regarding the conditions for participating in sports competitions.
