Finland's Airspace Monitoring Efforts
Finland is enhancing its airspace surveillance due to an increased risk of drones involved in attacks on St. Petersburg straying into its territory. The nation is deploying new monitoring systems and revising response protocols to prevent incidents related to these attacks. Finnish authorities note that Russian electronic warfare (EW) activity and technical failures can cause drones to deviate from their intended flight paths.
New radar systems have already been positioned near the city of Kouvola, where drone debris has previously been found. These systems are capable of determining the coordinates, altitude, and direction of airborne targets. The Finnish military is also utilizing intelligence from NATO allies, whose fighter jets patrol the region. This heightened vigilance reflects Finland's strategic position as a new NATO member bordering Russia.
A significant aspect of the situation is that Finland's Ministry for Foreign Affairs has stated it will not demand that Ukraine halt or reduce its attacks on Russia's oil sector. Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen emphasized:

Furthermore, on March 30, the Latvian National Armed Forces detected an unidentified drone near its border with Russia, in the Ludza and Balvi districts. The drone was operating close to the Latvian-Russian border but did not violate Latvian airspace. According to the Finnish broadcaster Yle, the likely cause for Ukrainian and Russian drones going off course is jamming, as both sides attempt to disrupt the navigation systems of the other's unmanned aircraft.
Consequently, Finland is taking proactive steps to safeguard its airspace in response to the current threat posed by regional drone activity.
