Exercise Narrow Waters 26-1
From May 18 to 29, the Finnish Navy is conducting Exercise Narrow Waters 26-1 in the Gulf of Finland and the coastal areas of Southern Finland. Approximately 3,000 personnel are taking part, including conscripts, reservists, and active-duty Navy members. NATO allies are also joining Finnish units—among them, a German Navy coastal jaeger company of about 100 troops and roughly 30 U.S. Marines.
Scope and Objectives
The drills extend beyond the Gulf of Finland to include the Archipelago Sea and Southern Finland’s coastal zones. Live-fire exercises are scheduled at the Mäkiluoto and Kirkomaa/Rankki ranges. The maneuvers also focus on coordination between naval and coastal units. Participating forces include:
- The Border Guard
- The Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command
- The Utti Helicopter Regiment
- The Air Force
Additionally, military equipment will be moved between Kirkkonummi and Kotka during the exercise. Unmanned maritime and aerial systems are being deployed, highlighting a modern approach to warfare training. These drills come amid deepening cooperation between Finland and NATO following the country’s accession to the alliance in 2023.
Exercise Narrow Waters 26-1 underscores Finland’s growing military partnership with NATO—a pivotal development since joining the alliance. The involvement of allies like Germany and the United States reflects a joint commitment to regional security.
Furthermore, the use of cutting-edge technologies such as unmanned systems, along with joint training across different branches, demonstrates Finland’s drive to enhance its military capabilities in response to evolving security challenges.
As Finland enhances its military preparedness through joint exercises with NATO allies, similar large-scale drills are taking place in Latvia, where nearly 5,000 troops are participating. These coordinated efforts underscore the alliance's commitment to regional security amidst rising tensions, particularly in light of recent airspace violations.
