Leaders Connect via Phone
On October 27, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, coordinated with Ukraine. This conversation followed up on a meeting held on October 20 in Oslo, which included leaders from Finland, Norway, and Ukraine. The talks covered critical topics such as Russia’s war against Ukraine, regional security in the Baltic Sea and Arctic areas, and ongoing support for Ukraine.
Both Stubb and Støre emphasized their countries’ long-standing commitment to backing Ukraine. President Stubb described the dialogue as open and substantive, while Prime Minister Støre highlighted the severe human and material toll of the conflict, along with its enduring repercussions.
“The suffering and destruction will affect many generations. During our discussion, we stressed the necessity of de-escalation,”
Jonas Gahr Støre
The Finnish and Norwegian leaders made it clear to Putin that concrete steps toward reducing tensions are essential, especially regarding attacks on Ukraine’s energy and infrastructure sectors.
“Peace must prevail, de-escalation is crucial, and Russia’s prolonging of the war has to end,”
Volodymyr Zelensky
Zelensky also confirmed Ukraine’s readiness to join trilateral negotiations alongside the United States and Russia planned for November.
Steps Toward Trilateral Negotiations
Preparations for the upcoming talks between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia are already underway. Vladimir Putin indicated Moscow’s willingness to resume these discussions in early November. This development came shortly after a nearly three-hour meeting between Putin and Steve Witkoff, a special envoy of former U.S. President Donald Trump. These events point to renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war and fostering peace in Europe.
The recent phone exchange between the leaders of Finland, Norway, and Russia highlights the crucial role of international cooperation in resolving conflicts. It also underscores how constructive dialogue can help stabilize the region amid ongoing hostilities. Continued diplomatic engagement reflects the global community’s determination to prevent further violence and to seek viable pathways toward peace during this critical phase of the Ukraine war.
As the diplomatic landscape evolves, new peace proposals from Ukraine and its allies are set to be unveiled in Saint Petersburg. These initiatives are expected to complement the upcoming trilateral negotiations, highlighting the international community's efforts to address the ongoing conflict and strive for stability in the region.
