Detention of the ship Fitburg
The Finnish authorities have detained the Russian cargo ship Fitburg, suspected of sabotaging underwater communication cables in the Baltic Sea. This occurred after a malfunction was discovered on the communication line between Helsinki and Tallinn. The incident was recorded on December 31.
There were 14 crew members on board the ship Fitburg, including citizens of Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan. The ship is registered under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. After the detention, it was found that four cables connecting Estonia with other countries were damaged, as well as one cable between the island of Hiiumaa and the mainland.
A representative of the Finnish authorities, Heikki Kopperoinen, noted that it is too early to say whether the incident was intentional or occurred due to negligence.
The detention of the ship Fitburg underscores the current risks to underwater communications, which are critical for communication between the countries of the Baltic region. Damage to the cables could have serious consequences for economic and informational security, which is especially important in the context of growing geopolitical tensions.
Further investigations may clarify the circumstances of the incident and determine possible threats to regional stability.
