Operation to intercept the freighter 'FITBURG'

The Finnish authorities conducted an operation to intercept the freighter 'FITBURG', suspected of damaging an underwater communication cable, on December 31. The vessel, which was en route from Saint Petersburg to Haifa, Israel, was detained and forcibly redirected to the port of Kantvik. The operation involved three helicopters from the Finnish Border Guard to ensure the detention of the vessel.

Onboard the 'FITBURG', steel subject to international sanctions was found. Consequently, 14 crew members, who are citizens of Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, have been detained. An arrest warrant has been requested for one Azerbaijani citizen, and one Russian has been issued a travel ban out of the country.
