A Solar Vessel Built from Scratch
Lukas Schöman, a yachtsman from Finland, has shown that long-distance travel on sunshine alone is possible. He piloted the Helios 11, an 11-meter boat he assembled in a humble shed, from Finland to the Spanish island of Ibiza—about 5,700 kilometers—with stops in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France. Throughout the entire trip, the craft never needed a single drop of fuel.
Schöman spent around 200 days building the vessel, which weighs roughly 1.5 tons. Its photovoltaic system delivers about 6 kW of power, working alongside 48-volt batteries, and an auxiliary sail helps save energy when winds are favorable. This kind of long-distance solar voyage offers a rare, real-world test of emissions-free navigation.
Challenges, Grit, and a Stolen Dinghy
The journey was far from smooth. In northern regions, Schöman had to cope with scarce sunlight and unpredictable weather, which put his energy management to the test. During a stop in Spain, thieves took the boat's inflatable tender. Rather than quit, he crafted a replacement from whatever materials he could find—a decision that speaks to both his engineering instincts and his determination.
