Fire Point's Ambitious New Venture
Ukraine's Fire Point, the manufacturer of the Flamingo cruise missile and various drones, is in active talks with European firms to develop a new air defense system by 2027. The company's co-founder and chief designer, Denis Shtiller, stated that Fire Point's goal is to reduce the cost of intercepting a ballistic missile to under $1 million. Shtiller believes achieving this price point would represent a 'game-changer for air defense solutions.' This initiative comes as European nations seek to bolster their defensive capabilities against modern aerial threats.
Established following Russia's 2022 invasion, Fire Point is Ukraine's largest producer of long-range drones. The company manufactures hundreds of drones daily, with each unit costing around €50,000. Furthermore, Fire Point has a monthly export potential of up to 2,500 drones. Currently, it also produces three Flamingo missiles per month, priced at approximately €600,000 each.
Company Developments and Strategic Plans
As part of its broader strategy, Fire Point is in the final stages of developing two hypersonic ballistic missiles:
- The FP-7, with a range of about 300 km
- The FP-9, capable of reaching 850 km and carrying an 800 kg warhead
The FP5 (Flamingo) cruise missile has already been deployed to strike Russian targets at distances up to 1,400 km.
The company anticipates receiving government approval for an investment from a Middle Eastern conglomerate, which has valued Fire Point at $2.5 billion. Additionally, Ukraine's antitrust body is expected to rule on a deal for the acquisition of a 30% stake in Fire Point for $760 million around October.
Shtiller also noted that strikes on Moscow, which is protected by dense air defense systems, could cause a significant shift in the consciousness of the Russian people and those in the higher echelons of power in Russia.
Fire Point is also advancing other technologies, including the development of a carbon fiber winding machine for manufacturing large solid-fuel rocket boosters capable of delivering satellites into orbit.
A rocket fuel production plant in Denmark is set to become operational later this year, pending two final approvals from Danish authorities. For its new air defense system project, Fire Point is exploring potential collaborations with European defense companies such as:
- Weibel
- Hensoldt
- SAAB
- Thales
- and the American ATACMS system from Lockheed Martin
The Emirati defense conglomerate Edge Group is a potential investor.
Fire Point's rapid growth underscores the expanding defense technology sector in Ukraine, driven by immediate security needs. Its potential partnerships with Western firms could significantly enhance Ukraine's indigenous capabilities while fostering stronger international defense industry ties. Success in this endeavor would not only improve regional air defense effectiveness but also demonstrate Ukraine's evolving role as a developer of advanced military technology.
As Fire Point continues to innovate in missile technology, their recently unveiled Flamingo missile boasts an impressive range of 3,000 km while maintaining a cost-effective production model. This advancement not only enhances Ukraine's defense capabilities but also positions the company as a competitive player on the European stage. Understanding these developments is crucial as they signify a strategic shift in regional security dynamics.
