Emeric Louisse’s Photo 'From Afar, I Hear the Cossacks' Becomes Emblem of Ukraine’s 112th Territorial Defense Brigade

Фотографія Емеріка Луїза 'Віддалено чую козаків' стала символом 112-ї бригади територіальної оборони України.

Emeric Louisse’s Photographic Tribute

The French artist and photographer Emeric Louisse created a powerful image titled 'From Afar, I Hear the Cossacks,' which has grown into a symbol of Ukrainian resistance against Russian invasion. The photograph features soldiers from Ukraine’s 112th Territorial Defense Brigade, who played key roles in defending Kyiv and liberating the Kharkiv and Kherson regions. This modern reinterpretation of Ilya Repin’s famous painting 'Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks' has gained widespread recognition, embraced by both Ukrainian and international media as a representation of the Cossack spirit and the fight for freedom.

The Photo’s Significance

During a meeting with members of the 112th Brigade, Louisse discussed the importance of this work. The brigade’s press service emphasized:

“It means a great deal to us that the heroes captured in this photograph are soldiers from the 112th Brigade. These are the people who defended Kyiv, contributed to the liberation of Kharkiv and Kherson, and continue to stand firm against Russian aggression every day.”

They also highlighted that “history is not merely repeating itself; it is gaining new heroes—ones Ukrainians will honor for centuries to come.”

The photograph is prominently displayed in a passageway at Kyiv’s Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) and is exhibited in the office of Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valerii Zaluzhnyi. Additionally, a copy was donated to the Oleksii Shovkunenko Kherson Regional Art Museum, which suffered looting by Russian occupiers. Notably, this image has been included in the 8th-grade literature textbook, underscoring its educational importance.

Louisse’s photograph has become an influential presence in public spaces and classrooms alike, reinforcing patriotic pride throughout Ukraine. Its frequent appearance in media and communal areas illustrates how contemporary art can preserve and convey the memory of Ukrainian heroism and resilience.

Beyond reflecting Ukraine’s current reality, the photograph serves as a vital tool in shaping national identity. It exemplifies how artistic expression within the context of war can shape historical understanding, honor courage, and raise awareness about ongoing events in Ukraine. As such, 'From Afar, I Hear the Cossacks' has become more than a symbol of struggle—it is an integral part of educating a new generation ready to defend their homeland.

The impact of Emeric Louisse's photograph extends beyond its visual power, as it also highlights the educational role of the 112th Brigade. This unit is now recognized in the educational curriculum, marking a significant moment as they are featured in an 8th-grade literature textbook. This inclusion not only honors their bravery but also ensures that future generations understand the sacrifices made during this pivotal time in Ukraine's history.
