Introducing IRIFI: Harmattan AI's Latest Autonomous Strike Weapon
French defense startup Harmattan AI has launched IRIFI, an advanced autonomous strike platform capable of missions extending up to 2000 kilometers. Unlike conventional systems, IRIFI operates independently of GNSS satellite navigation by relying on onboard navigation technology. For its final approach, it switches to visual guidance, enabling low-altitude flight that reduces radar detectability.
Capabilities and Strategic Investment in Harmattan AI
Designed for mass deployment, IRIFI is stored in containers within mobile launchers, allowing multiple units to be launched simultaneously for coordinated strikes on logistics hubs, airfields, command centers, and other key infrastructure. Mission objectives and parameters are set by commanders prior to launch, after which IRIFI autonomously executes its task within the assigned boundaries. Its artificial intelligence analyzes extensive satellite imagery during mission planning to enhance targeting accuracy.
Founded in Paris in 2024, Harmattan AI secured $200 million in Series B funding in January 2026, led by Dassault Aviation, reaching a valuation of $1.4 billion. The company’s portfolio also includes the Gobi interceptor, Sahara surveillance system, and Barkhan tactical strike platform. Company representatives emphasize the importance of combining mission autonomy with human oversight of lethal actions, stating:
“autonomy in mission execution with human control over lethal force”.
Muad M’Gari, a key figure at Harmattan AI, highlighted that
“AI-supported autonomy allows the deployment of large numbers of affordable systems while retaining some capabilities of long-range missiles”.
Details on IRIFI’s payload, speed, cost, testing history, and client base remain undisclosed.
The emergence of autonomous strike systems like IRIFI reflects a growing global trend toward integrating artificial intelligence and autonomy in warfare. Such innovations have the potential to transform military tactics by enabling faster, more precise responses to threats. Additionally, Harmattan AI’s successful capital raise underscores significant investor confidence in cutting-edge defense technologies, likely accelerating future advancements in this field.
