Russia's FSB Is Preparing a Forged Document on the Volyn Massacre to Drive a Wedge Between Ukraine and Poland

ФСБ Росії розробляє підроблений документ щодо Волинської трагедії з метою посилення напруги між Україною та Польщею.

Moscow's Disinformation Campaign

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, has warned that Russia is orchestrating an information operation aimed at inflaming tensions between Ukraine and Poland. According to him, the operation is being directed by Alexander Bortnikov, director of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). On July 5, the Kremlin plans to release fabricated documents related to the Volyn tragedy, designed to exacerbate friction between the two neighboring countries.

Kovalenko stated that Russian state-controlled media have been instructed to amplify these materials. Meanwhile, within the Polish government, there is a growing belief that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposal to establish a Ukrainian National Pantheon could further escalate the conflict. In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki may reduce his engagement with Zelenskyy.

Disputes and Decorations

On June 19, the Polish president decided to strip Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. The move followed a controversy over the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Notably, several Ukrainian officials have announced they are returning their Polish awards. Zelenskyy, for his part, said he has sent the order back to Poland by mail.

As a result, the state of relations between Ukraine and Poland remains delicate, and Russia's actions could significantly influence how these ties evolve.

With relations between Ukraine and Poland under strain, it is crucial to examine the role of information campaigns that can shape public perception. Russian disinformation efforts aimed at stoking conflicts may further complicate diplomatic links between the two nations. Poland's response to Ukraine's moves and the potential fallout for bilateral cooperation are key issues that demand close monitoring.

As tensions escalate between Ukraine and Poland, understanding the broader implications of these developments is essential. Recent reports indicate that Russia may exploit this rift for its own advantage, further complicating the already fragile diplomatic relations.
