The Clash Between Traditional Culture and Avant-Garde Art
The early 20th century in Ukraine was defined by a fierce literary struggle between defenders of traditional culture and proponents of radical new art. “You hand me a grease-stained 'Kobzar' and say: here is my art. My good man, I am ashamed for you... You cling to your 'Kobzar,' which reeks of tar and lard, and think your reverence will protect it. Your reverence has killed it. And there is no resurrection for it.” – Mykhail Semenko.
