The G7 summit in Évian

During the G7 summit currently taking place in Évian, European leaders intend to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump that Ukraine’s standing has significantly improved over the past year. This effort is designed to maintain Washington’s focus and continued support for Kyiv. The summit’s key discussion points include the war between Israel and Iran, the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

French officials stress that the goal for European leaders is to keep Trump engaged on Ukrainian matters. French President Emmanuel Macron plans to highlight Europe’s role in bearing the primary burden of supporting Ukraine. According to a statement from a Macron administration representative,

“Europeans are financing nearly 100% of aid to Ukraine.”
It is crucial that other G7 partners, especially the United States, at least do not worsen their stance on Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Growing Strength

Paris believes Kyiv’s position has grown stronger. Factors contributing to this include:

  • a €90 billion loan from the European Union;
  • difficulties faced by the Russian army on the front lines;
  • the development of Ukraine’s defense cooperation with Gulf countries.

A French diplomat remarked:

“Trump likes winners. Last year, Zelensky didn’t have strong cards. But the situation has changed.”

The summit’s date was rescheduled to accommodate Trump’s birthday. After official events, a separate gala dinner is planned for the U.S. president at Versailles. Relations between Macron and Trump have recently improved, with the leaders speaking regularly by phone. Trump has also stated he had productive conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, signaling new possibilities for finding ways to end the war.

European leaders hope that the shift in circumstances favoring Ukraine will help solidify U.S. support during the G7 summit. Emphasizing Europe’s role in backing Ukraine could be a key factor in shaping Washington’s policy toward Kyiv, especially amid growing competition among global powers. U.S. support remains critically important for Ukraine as the country continues to resist Russian aggression. The discussions at the summit may determine the future course of international aid and cooperation in the region.

As discussions progress at the G7 summit, the anticipation builds around the potential meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy, which could further influence the dynamics of international support for Ukraine.
