Kasparov Calls for Europe to Take Decisive Measures
Garry Kasparov, the former world chess champion and outspoken Russian dissident, has urged European nations to move beyond cautious steps and adopt a firm stance against Russia by providing Ukraine with robust support. Writing in The Telegraph, a prominent UK newspaper, Kasparov outlined five targeted actions that he believes are essential to halt the conflict. He warns that the war will continue unabated if Vladimir Putin gains control over the Donbas region and stresses that Putin’s regime poses a grave threat to global democracy.
Five Essential Actions to Support Ukraine
Kasparov’s recommendations for aiding Ukraine include:
- Establishing full airspace protection for Ukraine;
- Immediate delivery of weapons;
- Strict enforcement of existing sanctions;
- Severing diplomatic ties with Russia;
- Confiscating Russian state assets.
He also demands the withdrawal of all ambassadors from Moscow and calls for Russia’s expulsion from international organizations founded on democratic values. Kasparov emphasized:

European governments are currently debating the possibility of using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine. The European Union has approximately €210 billion of Russian assets frozen. A major milestone in supporting Ukraine has been agreements to supply nearly 1,000 Patriot missiles, with a significant portion financed through European mechanisms. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte condemned Russia's recent actions as reckless and dangerous. He expressed confidence that Russia’s strategy would ultimately fail, stating:
