Breakthrough in genetic research
After analyzing more than 500 genomes, geneticists have identified genetic traces of two ancient populations that were not known before in modern human DNA. The first group is believed to have lived in Africa and interacted with Homo sapiens ancestors more than 50,000 years ago. This unknown lineage contributed roughly 0.5–1% of the DNA carried by people today, the researchers note. Its origins may possibly be connected to Homo heidelbergensis.
The second lineage and why it matters
The second lineage turned up in people from Oceania. It split from the ancestors of modern humans about 1.8 million years ago, with Homo erectus being a likely source. According to the researchers, some of this ancient DNA may have aided Homo sapiens in coping with new diseases, climate shifts, and living conditions.
The team plans to keep searching for other unidentified human lineages, particularly in Africa and Asia. Finding these vanished populations opens fresh avenues for exploring human evolutionary history and how our species adapted to environmental pressures.
These discoveries underscore how much genetic studies can reveal about the evolution of humanity. Uncovering additional ancient groups may reshape our view of human history, especially migration patterns and interactions among different hominin species. Understanding the genetic legacy left behind by these populations could also support further research into human adaptation to a wide range of ecological settings.
