General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Makes Command Changes
On April 24, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine enacted personnel decisions triggered by a scandal within the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade operating near the Kupiansk front. As a result, the brigade commander was removed from his post, and the commander of the 10th Army Corps was dismissed and demoted. The stated reasons include concealing the true situation on the ground, losing defensive positions, and failing to deliver food supplies.
Supply Failures and New Leadership Take Over
The crisis in the 14th Brigade unfolded amid severe logistical difficulties affecting troops. Relatives of soldiers from the brigade's 2nd Mechanized Battalion reported critical conditions faced by their family members. According to them, personnel have endured harsh circumstances for eight months, resorted to drinking rainwater, and fainted from hunger. Airstrikes and missile attacks by Russian forces on crossings over the Oskil River have further complicated supply routes, forcing deliveries by boats and heavy drones.
The General Staff acknowledges a serious food supply problem and is boosting air defense, anti-drone measures, and electronic warfare capabilities. In response, provisions have already been delivered to the positions of the 14th Brigade. The General Staff has pledged to evacuate soldiers immediately when conditions allow. A comprehensive commission from the Ground Forces is investigating the situation, while an internal inquiry into officials of the 14th Brigade is being finalized, with materials to be handed over to law enforcement.
Colonel Taras Maksimov has been appointed as the new commander of the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade, and Brigadier General Artem Bohomolov now leads the 10th Army Corps. Previously, the brigade was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Anatoliy Lysetskyi, and the corps by Brigadier General Serhiy Perets. Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, tasked the commander of the Joint Forces, Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, with inspecting troop support, as the 10th Army Corps falls under his authority.
"The guys on the front lines have no food or water! The command is not responding. Soldiers are fainting from hunger and drinking rainwater," said Ivanna Poberezhniuk, daughter of a former brigade soldier.
The situation in the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade highlights deep-rooted issues in logistics for Ukrainian forces, especially amid active combat operations. The leadership reshuffle suggests an urgent need to address a crisis stemming from management and supply failures. Going forward, the General Staff's actions must improve conditions for frontline troops and prevent similar breakdowns.
The situation within the 14th Brigade has drawn significant attention, particularly after a recent investigation initiated by the Defense Ministry in response to alarming photos depicting exhausted soldiers. This scrutiny highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian forces and underscores the urgency of addressing logistical failures and leadership changes in the region.
