Iryna Herashchenko Weighs In on the Olha Martynovska Interview

Iryna Herashchenko, a lawmaker from the European Solidarity party, has spoken out about the controversy surrounding Olha Martynovska, a chef and judge on the show 'MasterChef.' Herashchenko backed the statement from the animal rights group UAnimals and sharply criticized the interview conducted by TV host Maria Efrosinina with Martynovska. She pointed out that during the conversation, both women laughed while discussing acts of violence against animals, sparking public outrage.

In a Facebook post, Herashchenko highlighted the widespread cruelty and evil in Ukraine, especially from the Russian Federation, and stressed that it is unacceptable for public figures like Martynovska and Efrosinina to display such behavior.

“There is so much cruelty and evil from Russia in our lives today that it is unbearable to hear Ukrainians themselves acting like two-legged creatures. Especially when public figures do it,”
she stated.

Backlash from Animal Advocates and the Public

She also expressed shock at the host’s conduct, noting that Efrosinina commands a massive audience and presents herself as a women’s rights advocate.

“Not stopping that speech, not distancing yourself, not condemning it, and then putting it on air—that shows a complete disconnect from public sentiment,”
the lawmaker added.

Herashchenko emphasized that Ukrainians are enduring tough times, and against the backdrop of heroic rescues by first responders helping both people and animals, stories about tormenting kittens come across as particularly repulsive.

The reaction from UAnimals was swift. The group voiced its indignation over the Efrosinina-Martynovska interview, which later had the segment on animal abuse removed. Both the host and the chef were forced to apologize to viewers for their remarks and behavior during the interview.

This incident reflects not only public attitudes toward animal cruelty but also the heightened sensitivity of Ukrainians to violence amid the war with Russia. Public figures with significant influence must be cautious with their words, as their actions can trigger strong societal backlash. In line with social norms and expectations, such cases demand open condemnation to prevent similar situations in the future.

The recent comments from Iryna Herashchenko bring to light a growing concern over animal welfare in Ukraine, especially in the context of public figures' influence. This controversy echoes a similar incident involving a MasterChef judge who faced backlash for admitting past cruelty towards animals, highlighting the need for accountability among those in the public eye.
