Yuriy Ivanovych Diakovsky
Yuriy Ivanovych Diakovsky, a posthumous Hero of Ukraine, was born on February 27, 1989, in the city of Stryi, Lviv Oblast. He was an active participant in the Revolution of Dignity, also known as the Maidan protests, and is recognized as one of the Heavenly Hundred—protesters killed during the uprising. During the demonstrations, Diakovsky was wounded twice: first on February 18, 2014, when he sustained an injury to his arm from a rubber bullet, and again on February 20, when he suffered a gunshot wound to the neck on Institutska Street in Kyiv.
Diakovsky died on April 18, 2014, near the city of Sloviansk in Donetsk Oblast. He had traveled there with Yuriy Popravka and fellow members of the Right Sector to defend Ukraine against pro-Russian separatist forces. His funeral was held in his hometown of Stryi on May 8, 2014. In 2015, he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, the nation's highest honor, in recognition of his courage and ultimate sacrifice for the country's independence.
