Remembering Stepan Vorobets
June 4, 2023, marks what would have been the 39th birthday of Stepan Vorobets, a Major and Hero of Ukraine who lost his life during the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine. Born on June 4, 1987, in the city of Kolomyia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, he served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Vorobets commanded a reconnaissance company within the headquarters battalion of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade, part of the "West" operational command.
On June 19, 2014, Vorobets was killed in the village of Zakitne, located in what was then Krasnolylyman (now Kramatorsk) district of Donetsk region. That day, he engaged Russian-terrorist groups in battle near the urban-type settlement of Yampil and the village of Zakitne. The fight involved soldiers from the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade under the command of battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel I. Lyashenko.
Posthumously, on September 29, 2023, Vorobets was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Kolomyia, where he is remembered as a courageous warrior who gave his life for Ukraine's independence.
The Significance of Vorobets' Feat
Honoring the memory of Stepan Vorobets is a crucial part of Ukraine's historical remembrance, as his sacrifice has become a symbol of the country's fight for sovereignty. Like many other service members, Vorobets displayed heroism during a difficult period when Ukrainian armed forces faced external aggression.
Such tributes help preserve the legacy of those who gave their lives for Ukraine's freedom and territorial integrity, while also strengthening national identity.
As we reflect on the bravery of Major Stepan Vorobets, it's important to remember other heroes who have made significant sacrifices for Ukraine. For instance, today marks what would have been the 28th birthday of another valiant soldier, Yurii Kovalchuk, whose story also exemplifies the spirit of resistance and dedication that defines the nation's struggle for independence.
