The Story of Hero of Ukraine Liubomyr Mikalo
Liubomyr Mikalo, a serviceman with the 103rd Separate Brigade of the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces, was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine in late 2025. He recounted the circumstances of his service, including a 42-day period spent encircled by enemy forces in the summer of 2025. While serving in the Sumy region, Liubomyr eliminated approximately thirty Russian soldiers.
Surviving the Encirclment
In the summer of 2025, the unit Mikalo was part of became encircled. The soldiers remained in an abandoned basement near the village of Oleksiivka for 42 days. During this time, they faced severe challenges, particularly with water supply. To secure necessary resources, they received water and food via drones, though some of the deliveries spoiled. With limited access to water, the troops collected several liters to last for days and maintained hygiene using wet wipes.
Liubomyr Mikalo noted that he did not consider his actions heroic, but simply part of his duty. He shared his thoughts on the award:
“Receiving an award is always pleasant, but to receive the highest award in Ukraine is not just pleasant, it is an honor. It is a point of pride to bear the title of Hero of Ukraine. It means you have done something valuable for your country.”- Liubomyr Mikalo
He also mentioned he did not fully expect the award, as the attitude of his loved ones was most important to him.
“Dad, you are a hero to me without any official titles. And not just to me, but to mom and all our family,”- said Liubomyr's son.
Despite receiving the Hero title, Mikalo emphasized he would not demand anything additional if he did not receive material benefits and would be grateful for what he has. “If they give an apartment or something else – good, I will be grateful. If there is none of that – I will not demand anything nor be upset about it,” he stated.
The title of Hero of Ukraine is one of the nation's highest state honors, recognizing exceptional service to the country, especially in wartime. Liubomyr Mikalo's story highlights not only his personal achievements but also the resilience and dedication of Ukrainian soldiers fighting for their country's independence. Such accounts serve as an example for future generations and strengthen patriotic spirit among Ukrainians. The award underscores the immense sacrifices made by individuals on the front lines of this ongoing conflict.
