Remembering Colonel Yurii Yurchyk, Hero of Soledar
Every morning at 9 a.m., Ukrainians pause to honor those who have fallen in the war with Russia. Among those remembered is Colonel Yurii Yurchyk, who was killed in action on January 8, 2023, during the fierce battle for the city of Soledar. Yurii Yurchyk was born on June 24, 1985, in the Khmelnytskyi region. He laid the foundation for his career in the security services by graduating from the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
In December 2022, Yurii Yurchyk formed and led the 'Soledar' composite detachment of the State Border Guard Service to defend the city under intense combat conditions. On January 7, 2023, his unit was tasked with securing positions in Soledar's central district. Tragically, the following day, January 8, a massive artillery barrage began. Demonstrating exceptional bravery, Yurii Yurchyk evacuated two wounded soldiers from the battlefield. While rendering this aid, he sustained severe injuries that proved fatal.
Honoring His Legacy
Yurii Yurchyk was laid to rest in Starokostiantyniv, Khmelnytskyi region, where he is honored as a true national hero. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the 'Gold Star,' the nation's highest honor, in recognition of his valor and sacrifice in defense of his homeland. He is survived by his wife and daughter, who carry the memory of his heroic path and his contribution to Ukraine's fight for independence.
Yurii Yurchyk's death was a loss not only for his family but for the entire nation, as he became a symbol of courage and self-sacrifice in wartime. His frontline leadership and personal role in defending Soledar underscore the critical importance of military service and the heroism of Ukrainian soldiers in the struggle for sovereignty.
