Bangladesh Tops List of Migrant Concerns for Ukraine's Migration Chief

Бангладеш знаходиться на першому місці у пріоритетах міграції для українського керівника.

Migration Worries Take Center Stage

In an interview with the Ukrainian outlet Glavcom, Nataliia Naumenko, head of the State Migration Service, singled out citizens of Bangladesh as her primary concern. She described Bangladesh as a densely populated, impoverished nation whose policies actively push its people abroad. According to Naumenko, repatriating Bangladeshi nationals via their embassy is nearly impossible, creating significant hurdles for both the migration service and Ukrainian society at large.

Naumenko expressed no such fears regarding Pakistani nationals, whom she views as more skilled workers.

“After a thorough examination of the issue, I have absolutely no fear of Pakistani citizens, who are more qualified employees,” she stated.
She also spoke positively about Turkish nationals, noting that before the war, they were involved in road construction projects in Ukraine. Naumenko stressed the importance of engaging with individuals who either possess specific qualifications or can quickly acquire new skills.

Risks and Disinformation

Beyond these specific nationalities, Naumenko highlighted risks tied to illegal Ukrainian migrants, which could threaten the country's visa-free regime with European nations.

“Of course, when there is a surge of illegal migrants from Ukraine, which shares borders with EU countries, we face very serious questions,” she said.
During meetings with European counterparts about the visa-free policy, the number of illegal migrants leaving Ukraine is a recurring topic, posing a real danger of suspending the program.

Another critical factor is Russian propaganda, which spreads false claims about a mass influx of foreign migrants into Ukraine. Social media and Telegram channels are flooded with photos, videos, and AI-generated images purporting to show Ukrainians being replaced by foreigners. Naumenko emphasized the need to manage this situation, as it could severely impact national security and the country's international reputation.

Naumenko’s remarks underscore the pressing importance of Ukraine's migration policy amid current global migration challenges. Given the ongoing situation, Ukraine must carefully assess how migration flows might affect its internal security and international relations, particularly concerning its visa-free access to the EU.

As concerns regarding migrant populations escalate, the implications for Ukraine's demographic landscape become increasingly critical. In light of the challenges outlined by Naumenko, it's essential to consider the broader context of Ukraine's reliance on foreign labor to address its demographic issues.
