Call for Czech Defense Readiness

Karel Řehka, head of the Czech Armed Forces' General Staff, has called for an accelerated defense buildup in response to the threat from Russia. He stressed the urgent need to modernize the military, procure ammunition, and acquire new equipment. Řehka clarified he is not warning of an imminent war, but emphasized the danger of delaying defense measures. In his view, Russia might mistakenly conclude that Europe is weak and unprepared for a prolonged conflict.

Key Modernization Priorities

Řehka highlighted that time for modernization is running out, as European armies have operated for years under budget cuts and slow procurement processes. Among the essential items to be acquired, he listed:

  • ammunition
  • air defense systems
  • drones
  • modern artillery
  • armored vehicles
  • cyber defense
  • logistics

The Czech Republic, which identifies Russia as a key threat in its National Security Strategy, is also purchasing ammunition for Ukraine's Armed Forces through its own initiative.

Meanwhile, the Czech government led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš does not plan to raise defense spending to meet new NATO targets. Řehka emphasized:

'An army is built to be meaningful in a real war. And it is done precisely to prevent war from happening.' - Karel Řehka

He added, 'If a potential adversary sees weakness, it may take a risk. If it sees readiness, the cost of attack increases.'

At the same time, Baltic states and Poland rank the Russian threat as their top priority, while Northern Europe is developing civil defense and evacuation plans. NATO is also restructuring its rapid deployment system on the eastern flank. The Czech Republic conducts monthly siren tests nationwide and is modernizing its military through the acquisition of F-35 fighter jets. Ukraine's ambassador to the Czech Republic, Vasyl Zvarych, has also expressed support on this issue, underscoring the importance of international cooperation amid growing threats.

These statements reflect a broader trend in Europe, where nations are adapting their defense strategies to new geopolitical realities. Heightened readiness against potential Russian threats is becoming a priority for many European states, signaling a possible shift in regional military doctrines. As tensions rise, it is crucial for countries not only to modernize their armed forces but also to actively cooperate internationally to strengthen collective security.

As the Czech Republic ramps up its defense initiatives, the evolving role of Ukraine in the global arms market becomes increasingly relevant. With Ukraine now serving as a significant supplier of military equipment to both the United States and Europe, understanding its contributions can provide crucial insights into the broader security landscape in response to Russian aggression.
