Major AI Chatbots Experience Service Interruptions
On September 3, users around the globe ran into problems with three well-known AI chatbots: Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Google's Gemini. Anthropic flagged trouble across a number of its models, while Downdetector logged more than 35,000 user complaints about ChatGPT. Gemini also drew reports of failures from users in multiple countries.
Anthropic's AI services began showing issues at roughly 16:40 Kyiv time. Both the Claude web interface and its API were affected, with people seeing error messages, cut-off replies, and requests that simply did not execute. Developers relying on Claude Code for writing and checking code were impacted as well. Anthropic acknowledged that the incident involved its Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1, and Opus 5 models, and later said Mythos/Fable 5, Opus 4.8, and Opus 4.6 were also affected. A notice marking the investigation was issued at 16:26 Kyiv time, and about fifteen minutes afterward the company said it had identified the cause and was preparing a fix.
ChatGPT and Gemini: What Went Wrong
ChatGPT users also dealt with service interruptions, according to Downdetector figures. OpenAI's status page insisted that its systems were fully operational, even though the company had previously acknowledged a high error rate in ChatGPT Work Mode, an incident that lasted six minutes. Gemini complaints started arriving around 15:44 Kyiv time, with users reporting issues from:
