Gmail to Finally Let Users Change Their Account Usernames

Користувачі Gmail зможуть оновити свої імена облікових записів.

Google Announces Major Gmail Update

On April 1, 2026, Google announced a significant new feature for Gmail: the ability for users to change their primary email username without losing any data. This long-awaited functionality arrives 22 years after Gmail's initial launch on April 1, 2004, and will first roll out to users in the United States. This change addresses a common user request for greater control over their digital identity.

Key Features and Important Restrictions

The new username change comes with several key provisions:

  • Users can select any available username ending in @gmail.com.
  • All associated Google services will automatically sync to the new address.
  • The old address will become an alias, allowing login and sending/receiving email from both addresses.
  • Users will have the option to revert to their previous username.

However, Google has implemented strict limits on this feature. Username changes are permitted no more than once per year, with a lifetime cap of three changes per account. While offering more flexibility, these rules are designed to prevent abuse and maintain account stability.

"The introduction of username changes in Gmail is a significant step for Google, as it gives users greater control over their online identity."

Given Gmail's status as one of the world's most popular email services, this added flexibility could attract new users and strengthen loyalty among existing ones. It may also increase overall user satisfaction by allowing people to adapt their accounts to reflect personal or professional life changes, a feature long standard with many competing services.
