Russian Strikes on Chernobyl: How Rescuers Prevented a Catastrophe from Happening Again

Today, on the Day of Commemoration of the Participants in the Elimination of the Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Accident, the head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Andriy Danik, reminded of the courage and self-sacrifice of those who saved millions of lives in 1986. The liquidators stood on the front line, remaining a shield against the most terrible nuclear disaster.


“Today, on the Day of Commemoration of the Participants in the Elimination of the Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Accident, we bow our heads to those who took the first and most terrifying blow in 1986. The liquidators went into the very heart of the nuclear threat, understanding that they were saving not just the country — they were saving the future. Their courage and self-sacrifice became the shield that preserved the lives of millions.” - he emphasized.

Danik also noted that decades after the tragedy, the threat from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant does not disappear. Russian attacks on this zone create new dangers not only for the region but for the entire world.


The government continues to work on ensuring safety and honoring the memory of the liquidators who selflessly gave their lives. Danik urged people to remember the heroism and self-sacrifice of these individuals and also to ensure safety as their personal responsibility.
