Russia's Long-Range Assaults: The Critical Threat to Ukraine's Defense

Засоби дальнього удару Росії: Серйозна небезпека для обороноздатності України.

The Threat of Russian Long-Range Strikes

According to Carnegie Endowment analyst Michael Kofman, the primary danger facing Ukraine is Russia's campaign of long-range strikes, which combines ballistic missiles and drones. The winter demonstrated that Ukraine's most pressing challenge is not the front line, but precisely these deep attacks. Kofman notes that while Ukraine intercepts over 80% of attack drones, it remains critically dependent on American Patriot systems and PAC-3 interceptors.

Russia has the capacity to allocate 50 or more 'Geran' drones against a single target, overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses. As Kofman points out,

"It's one thing when Iran launches 60 drones and a few get through. It's another when it's 600 to 800 or more one-way attack drones in a single night"
—highlighting the vastly different scale of assaults Ukraine confronts. This relentless bombardment targets critical infrastructure and population centers, aiming to cripple the nation's resilience.

Challenges and International Support

Furthermore, the expert emphasizes that

"You cannot assemble something for ten thousand dollars that will solve the 'Iskander' problem. That's the real catch."
This underscores the severe difficulties Ukrainian forces face in countering advanced Russian ballistic missiles like the 'Iskander-M' and 'Zircon'.

Finland has also backed Ukraine, publicly declaring its support following recent U.S. statements about limited supplies. This demonstrates the continued international solidarity with Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression.

Ukraine's own domestic solutions for countering cruise missiles and drones include:

  • deploying low-cost interceptor drones
  • tactical radars
  • mobile anti-aircraft guns
  • helicopters
  • developing a unified sensor ecosystem

The threat posed by these Russian strikes underscores the urgent need for Ukraine to enhance its air defense capabilities. Facing massive, coordinated attacks with highly effective drones and missiles, Ukraine must pursue innovative solutions and technologies to protect its territory. International support, including from nations like Finland, will be vital in strengthening these defenses and securing the necessary resources to counter the aggressor.

As Ukraine grapples with the ongoing threat of long-range strikes, it is crucial to understand how the nation's military is addressing its own vulnerabilities in this area. Recent advancements in long-range strike capabilities reflect a strategic shift aimed at enhancing defense and deterrence against Russian aggression. This development not only highlights Ukraine's adaptive strategies but also underscores the importance of international support in bolstering its military effectiveness.
