Google Introduces New Toggle in Search Console
A new feature in Google Search Console will soon allow site owners to prevent their content from being used in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Initially, a small group of domain owners in the United Kingdom will test the functionality before a worldwide rollout. Sites that choose to opt out will no longer receive impressions or traffic generated by these AI-powered search features.
Expanded Analytics and Control in Search Console
Google is also enhancing Search Console with tools that show which pages appear in AI-generated responses and the countries where they are displayed. Importantly, opting out will not affect a site’s ranking in standard search results. This means publishers can control their AI visibility without hurting their traditional search performance.
The announcement follows the I/O 2026 conference, where Google unveiled an updated search experience. New capabilities include a dynamic search bar for complex queries and support for video, images, files, and Chrome browser tabs. Google is also consulting with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority regarding these changes.

These updates could reshape content strategies for many websites, giving owners more control over their material amid growing competition from AI. Choosing to opt out of AI Overviews may be a key move for those wanting to protect their content from automated use. The planned global launch after UK testing signals a potential shift in how online content is managed and monetized.
As Google continues to evolve its search capabilities, the introduction of AI-driven features is not the only significant change. The recent overhaul, powered by Gemini 3.5, marks the most extensive transformation in 25 years, highlighting the growing importance of AI in shaping online search experiences. This shift could have profound implications for how content is created and consumed, emphasizing the need for website owners to stay informed about these advancements.
