Belarusian KGB Agent Detained in Ukraine
Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate and Security Service have exposed and detained a Belarusian KGB agent who was attempting to infiltrate Ukrainian military intelligence. The counterintelligence operation lasted several months. The agent, who has been working for the Belarusian KGB since 2015, was deployed to Ukraine in 2020 to carry out espionage tasks. Her cover for these activities was a job in journalism. She initially worked for the 112 channel before securing a position at one of Ukraine's leading media outlets.
Agent's Mission and Arrest
The spy's mission was to gather information on Belarusians and Russians fighting on Ukraine's side, as well as to establish contacts with employees of the Chinese embassy in Kyiv to collect intelligence on the activities of Chinese diplomats. According to reports, on her handler's orders, she traveled to an EU country for additional briefings under the guise of needing a medical examination.
After compiling a substantial body of evidence, the hostile agent was detained in Kyiv, where her smartphone and dictaphone, which she used to collect classified information, were seized.
The spy is currently in custody and has been formally charged. She faces up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. In a separate incident, military counterintelligence also detained a Russian intelligence informant in the Mykolaiv region, who was identified as a 21-year-old serviceman from one of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' anti-aircraft defense units.
This arrest demonstrates the active efforts of Ukrainian security services to counter foreign intelligence officers and agents seeking information on military and strategic matters in Ukraine. The incident underscores the critical importance of counterintelligence work amid heightened regional tensions and threats from neighboring states. These operations are a routine part of Ukraine's defense against hybrid warfare tactics employed by adversaries.
Uncovering such agents can significantly impact security and stability in Ukraine, especially within the context of the ongoing conflict in the country's east and tense relations with Russia and Belarus. - Source: Security Service of Ukraine
