The nature of injuries sustained by Ukrainian defenders has changed - Chief Surgeon of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Recently, Ukrainian soldiers have started to sustain more serious injuries due to advanced Russian firearms. Currently, 81.3% of the injured have shrapnel wounds, while only 18.7% have gunshot wounds.

Combat injuries have become more complex and often affect multiple body parts simultaneously. The main source of such injuries is various types of drones.

The most dangerous factor remains bleeding, which is the leading cause of death on the battlefield. If a large artery is not stopped within a few minutes, the chances of survival drastically decrease.

Statistics show that 80% of the injured require immediate surgical assistance to stop the bleeding. Of these, 70% involve injuries to the major arteries of the lower limbs, while 30% involve the upper limbs.

Ukrainian doctors are introducing new treatment methods, such as thoracoscopy for heart injuries, laparoscopic surgeries, and the use of stapling devices for tissue suturing.

The application of cutting-edge technologies in the military will help increase the chances of saving injured soldiers.

Colonel of the medical service, Kostyantyn Humenyuk, noted that Ukrainian soldiers are experiencing more serious and complex injuries as a result of the conflict in the eastern part of the country due to the use of advanced Russian firearms. Modern combat injuries, which include multiple injuries to various body areas, present new challenges to medical personnel. Nevertheless, the implementation of new treatment methods and technologies will improve the chances of saving injured fighters and enhance their subsequent rehabilitation.
