Within a Decade of Handing Finance to AI, a Collapse Looms, Harari Warns

Економічні виклики: чи готові ми до зриву в епоху штучного інтелекту?

Yuval Noah Harari's Alarming Vision for a Machine-Run Economy

During a recent YouTube appearance, Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari offered a stark warning about what could happen if artificial intelligence is given control over the financial system. He argues that within ten years of such a transition, humanity might no longer understand how its own economy works, and when that crash occurs, no one will be able to explain its cause. To illustrate the danger, Harari compared people to cows: just as cattle are unaware of how checks and stocks function, most humans fail to grasp the financial instruments that quietly steer their lives. The warning adds to a growing global debate over who—or what—should control increasingly complex financial markets.

Growing Institutional Alarm Over AI-Driven Markets

The Bank of England and the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) have already added "algorithmic herding behavior" to their lists of threats to financial stability. In a 2026 report, the American regulator FINRA warned about the dangers of autonomous AI agents making decisions without human involvement. Additionally, starting in August 2026, the European Union will classify AI used in finance as a high-risk technology, signaling escalating concern among regulators about the impact of emerging tech on markets.

"AI will invent financial instruments far more sophisticated than bonds and stocks, and we will stop understanding them. Just as cows do not understand checks and stocks, even though these things govern their lives. Ten years from now, after we entrust AI with the financial system, there will be a crash—and advisors will rush to the president saying the market is falling apart, but nobody understands why. AI will tell us to do such and such, and we will simply have to believe it, because we don't understand what is happening."

Harari's statements raise serious questions about whether financial stability can survive the rapid advancement of technology, and they underscore the need for regulators and the public to stay vigilant. The growing urgency calls for new rules and standards designed to address the unique challenges of embedding AI in financial systems, as societies try to balance innovation with safety and accountability.
