Underground Kindergarten Planned for Kharkiv
In response to relentless shelling since the full-scale invasion began, the city of Kharkiv is expanding its network of protected spaces with plans to build an underground kindergarten. Project documentation for the first such facility has been prepared, with construction slated to begin this year. This initiative highlights the extreme measures Ukrainian cities are taking to protect civilians, especially children, from aerial attacks.
Kharkiv already has significant experience in creating secure educational facilities. It was the first city in the world to convert a metro station into an underground school. Currently, eight subterranean schools are operational in the city, with three more under construction. Mayor Ihor Terekhov emphasized that these measures are a grim necessity due to the escalating security situation in the region.
Adapting to the Realities of War
This winter, Russia concentrated its attacks on Ukraine's energy sector, leaving tens of thousands of homes in Kharkiv without heat or electricity. Some of these buildings are beyond repair, underscoring the severity of the crisis. Mayor Terekhov expressed concern over the need to move life underground, noting that Kharkiv was once a comfortable, sunny city but is now forced to build subterranean spaces and open underground schools.
This winter has been the most difficult of the entire war for Ukraine, and the shift in enemy tactics presents new challenges for the city. Kharkiv continues to seek ways to ensure the safety of its residents, implementing innovative solutions to protect children and the educational process.
The expansion of Kharkiv's network of shielded educational institutions reflects the critical need to adapt to wartime conditions and a deteriorating security situation.
