Kharkiv's Heating Crisis Following Attack
A massive Russian strike on Kharkiv's energy infrastructure has severely damaged the city's heating system, forcing the shutdown of heating for 820 residential buildings. To prevent further destruction of the network, Mayor Ihor Terekhov has ordered the draining of coolant from one of the city's largest thermal power plants. This drastic measure was necessitated by the extensive damage inflicted on the city's infrastructure during the attacks. This latest assault is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian civilian energy systems, particularly as winter approaches.
Widespread Attacks Across Multiple Regions
The overnight assault was not limited to Kharkiv; Kyiv, the Kyiv region, Dnipro, Sumy, and Konotop also came under fire. In Kyiv, damage was recorded in five separate districts. In Konotop, located in the Sumy region, a children's educational institution, private homes, and other infrastructure objects were damaged in the shelling.
In Kharkiv, 101 'invincibility points' will operate around the clock to support residents left without heat. Mayor Terekhov acknowledged the situation is difficult but stated all services are working on-site and decisions are being made swiftly and responsibly. He emphasized the city is maintaining control and will do everything possible for Kharkiv to endure these hard times. Possible disruptions to electric public transport have also prompted the authorities to launch additional bus routes to ensure residents can move around the city.
