Kharkiv region's new project targets fiber-optic drones
Fiber-optic drones, which are steered through a physical cable and thus much harder to disrupt, have become a serious concern on the battlefield. In response, Kharkiv region has started building its first line of defense dedicated specifically to these Russian drones. The pilot project is being run at one of the region's facilities, with 7 million hryvnias from the regional budget. Test results should come in three weeks.
Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, said:
"We have already allocated the first 7 million hryvnias from the regional budget to create the first line. It will be aimed at countering fiber-optic drones. We expect results in three weeks."
If the tests prove effective, the system will be expanded to the most dangerous areas, an important move for regional security against drone threats.
Other regions add extra protection
Meanwhile, in Zaporizhzhia region, work has begun to reinforce public transport stop complexes. Buses in communities located closer to the front line are being outfitted with electronic warfare equipment and drone detectors. This is part of a wider protection effort that includes building 4,000 km of anti-drone defenses along roads by the end of 2026.
Ukraine has also rolled out a program to shield frontline cities, including Kherson, from Russian drone attacks. The initiative involves a range of measures aimed at detecting, intercepting, and neutralizing enemy unmanned vehicles. Syniehubov emphasized the importance of these efforts:
"Next, we will scale the project to the most dangerous areas."
These actions reflect the country's increasing focus on security in the face of modern military challenges.
