IBM Connects Two Quantum Processors for the First Time

On November 2nd at 11:03 PM, the IBM Research team successfully linked two large superconducting quantum processors, marking a breakthrough in building powerful quantum computers from separate modules. The experiment utilized two 120-qubit Nighthawk R1 processors, housed inside a refrigeration system cooled close to absolute zero. The processors were connected via four 80-centimeter superconducting aluminum cables, which were attached vertically from above rather than from the side.

Quantum information was transmitted from a primary qubit to a dedicated communication qubit, then through an adapter into the cable. The average fidelity of quantum state transfer between the processors reached 99%, with the best transmission channel achieving 99.29% accuracy. The precision of joint logical operations between qubits on different chips measured 94.75%. Additionally, researchers generated stable quantum entanglement involving four and six qubits simultaneously across both processors.

Future Implications for Quantum Computing

Remarkably, the four connecting cables remained fully functional after undergoing three complete heating and cooling cycles. This milestone opens new pathways for developing modular quantum computers that can be scaled up by linking multiple units. The research team, led by Neereja M. Sundaresan, has published images documenting the experimental setup.

"Connecting quantum processors in this experiment represents a critical advance toward building larger, more powerful quantum computers," said Neereja M. Sundaresan.

The demonstrated stability and high-fidelity information transfer between modules highlight significant potential for further exploration in this field. Such progress could profoundly impact the advancement of quantum technologies and their applications in areas including:

  • Cryptography
  • Materials Science
  • Artificial Intelligence

As quantum computing continues to evolve, modular designs like this one offer a promising strategy for overcoming hardware scaling challenges faced by the industry.

This significant achievement by IBM Research not only paves the way for modular quantum computing but also aligns with their recent announcement about a quantum computer that has demonstrated impressive fidelity across chip connections.
