The Perfect Sauce for Shawarma: What Is It Really Like?

Секрети найсмачнішого соусу для шаурми: що варто знати?

Shawarma has long ceased to be just street food and unhealthy eating. Today, this street food surprises with its taste and quite a new concept. Shawarma has become delicious, healthy, and quite diverse.

With the growing popularity of shawarma, there have also emerged many options for preparing this dish at home. Almost immediately, the need for a tasty sauce to accompany shawarma arose, as it is the sauce that creates the flavor balance. When it comes to shawarma sauce, one can consider ready-made options or prepare such a sauce independently.

Classic or Modern: How to Choose Your Sauce for Shawarma?

First of all, it is difficult to find a single, truly classic sauce for shawarma. These dishes, which have literally migrated around the world, often “accumulate” incredible additions. Therefore, speaking about a single classic variant is not only difficult but also incorrect.

Many chefs and even casual enthusiasts choose tahini sauce as the classic option for shawarma sauce. It is also known for being added to hummus. To prepare it, one grinds and mixes:

  • sesame seeds;
  • lemon juice;
  • garlic;
  • salt;
  • water;
  • olive oil.

However, this sauce has quite a specific taste.

A few more popular sauces for shawarma:

  1. Garlic Sauce. It is prepared based on garlic and mayonnaise.
  2. Ginger-Soy Sauce. It is made with soy sauce, fresh or powdered ginger, and garlic.
  3. Harissa Sauce. This spicy sauce is made with hot peppers, garlic, cumin, and other spices.
  4. Olive Oil and Lemon Sauce: a simple sauce made from olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

In different countries, various sauce variations with their unique flavors may be used. Therefore, it is indeed difficult to find a single classic shawarma worldwide.

To Buy or Not to Buy Sauce for Shawarma?

It is essential to understand that dishes like shawarma must maintain a perfect balance of flavors. In this concept, the sauce gives shawarma a flavor “depth” and spiciness. However, this is not its only task. The sauce helps make the meat and vegetables juicier. Thus, a properly prepared shawarma cannot be dry.

The consistency of the sauce can also add different textural layers to shawarma. This means it has an unobvious but crucial role. The diversity of textures and consistencies enhances the taste quality of any dish.

Regarding ready-made sauces available in stores, there are many options as well. A special mayonnaise-based sauce with added spices like turmeric, black pepper, and curry would be perfect for shawarma. It will undoubtedly become an ideal addition to a homemade dish.
