Introducing the Streaming Integrity Initiative

On September 14, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) unveiled the Streaming Integrity Initiative, a new effort aimed at tackling fraudulent streaming practices on music platforms. This initiative is designed to safeguard the earnings of artists, songwriters, and rights holders by addressing artificial inflation of streaming numbers used to generate illegitimate revenue.

Major industry leaders including Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Merlin have joined the Streaming Integrity Initiative. IFPI highlights that large-scale fraud schemes are diverting significant income away from creators, labels, and music publishers.

Commitments Required from Participating Companies

Members of the initiative agree to uphold five key standards:

  • Thorough verification of music rights and client identities through Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures;
  • Rigorous copyright compliance checks on content;
  • Detection and investigation of fraudulent activity;
  • Ongoing enhancement of anti-fraud security measures;
  • Assessment of content for signs of fraud and risks linked to artificial intelligence technologies.

Participants are also encouraged to share information about fraud incidents when legally permissible and must take action against fraudulent actors and repeat offenders.

With manipulation techniques, especially those leveraging AI, continuing to evolve rapidly, initiatives like this are critical to protect the interests of all stakeholders in the music ecosystem. This announcement was published on September 15 at 11:39.

The launch of the Streaming Integrity Initiative reflects growing concern within the music industry over streaming fraud, which threatens the financial well-being of artists and labels. By establishing stricter content verification and rights protection protocols, the initiative aims to foster greater transparency and fairness in the music business, ultimately restoring trust in streaming platforms for creators and listeners alike.
