Speed Restrictions on Starlink in Ukraine

Elon Musk suggested to former U.S. President Donald Trump imposing speed limits on Starlink satellite internet services in Ukraine. This decision impaired Ukraine’s anti-drone defense capabilities by slowing down the military-grade Starshield communication system. The speed restrictions, set to roughly 160 km/h, made it harder to intercept faster Russian drones and missiles. This development was reported by The Telegraph on October 16, 2026.

At the White House, Trump distanced himself and Musk from responsibility for Ukraine’s loss of Starlink access, stating:

“I do not consider either myself or Musk responsible for Ukraine losing access to Starlink.”
An anonymous U.S. official also clarified that Trump never requested any speed limitations on Starlink. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the slowdown a dangerous surprise during the EU summit in Brussels.

Ongoing Issues and International Responses

Efforts to restore full Starlink connectivity in Ukraine are underway, but the previous speed caps remain in place. Zelensky noted, “Our defense ministry is in contact, and my partners have told me there were signals from the White House about restoring these capabilities. Have the prior speed limits been lifted? No. But are they coming back now? Yes.”

Poland has voiced concerns over Europe’s heavy reliance on Elon Musk and SpaceX. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski addressed Musk directly, writing:

“As your European customers, we are watching you closely.”
Meanwhile, the European Union plans to launch its own satellite internet system, Iris2, by 2030 to reduce dependence on American providers like Starlink.

This episode highlights the increasing complexity of geopolitical dynamics where advanced technologies such as Starlink play critical roles in national security. It also underscores the risks of relying on private companies for essential infrastructure, emphasizing the need for independent technological solutions to ensure resilience and sovereignty. Additionally, it illustrates how political decisions can directly impact military operations during ongoing conflicts.

The ongoing situation with Starlink in Ukraine raises significant concerns about service reliability amid escalating political tensions. As the challenges persist, understanding the implications of speed restrictions on satellite services becomes crucial for grasping the broader impact on military operations and international relations in the region.
