Ukraine's Fruit Import Bill Jumps by $120 Million in 2025

Значне зростання витрат на імпорт фруктів в Україні у 2025 році.

Fruit Imports into Ukraine in 2025

In 2025, Ukraine imported 725,000 tons of fruit, valued at $922.6 million. This represents an increase in both volume and cost compared to the previous year, when 2024 imports totaled 690,000 tons worth $804.6 million. The total import value rose by $120 million year-on-year, reflecting a broader trend of rising supply costs. This growth highlights a recovering consumer market despite ongoing economic pressures.

The most significant decline in fruit imports occurred in 2022, when deliveries plummeted by 33%—from 990,000 tons in 2021 to 664,000 tons. This sharp drop was attributed to several war-related factors:

  • logistical collapse in the initial months of the war;
  • closure of key transport routes;
  • a sharp increase in transportation costs;
  • mass emigration of Ukrainians abroad.

However, a rebound began in 2023, with the monetary value of imports growing by over 20%, signaling a recovery in demand for fruit.

Composition of the Import Basket and Market Trends

Bananas and citrus fruits continue to dominate Ukraine's fruit import basket. The rising import costs are driven not only by increased volumes but also by global price inflation for fruit and growing consumer demand for premium categories like avocados, mangoes, and exotic berries. For the 2026 season, forecasted reasons for further price increases for vegetables and fruit include:

  • labor shortages;
  • adverse weather conditions;
  • rising production costs.
The data was provided by the State Customs Service and analyzed by the publication Glavcom.

The 2025 increase in fruit imports points to a gradual market recovery following the severe wartime declines. This resurgence in demand and import volume may indicate a stabilizing economic situation, albeit one still exposed to risks from global market inflation and local production challenges. Monitoring this sector remains crucial, as shifts here directly impact food security and fruit affordability for Ukrainian consumers.
