Starting from March 1, 2026, pensions in Ukraine will be indexed by 12.1%. At the same time, for some pensioners, the actual amount of payments may not change or may only increase by a symbolic amount. This is related to the peculiarities of the recalculation mechanism and the application of supplements and restrictions. TSN reports this.

To roughly calculate the expected increase, pensioners are advised to obtain a copy of the order for the assignment or recalculation of their pension. This document contains information about the insurance experience, earnings, and the basic pension amount, which are used during the indexing process.

Pension Indexation in March 2026: How to Calculate the Increase on Your Own

The key indicator for the calculation is the line «Pension amount by age (Article 27)». This amount, excluding supplements, is multiplied by a coefficient of 1.121. The resulting value is the new indexed base of the pension, from which all supplements and the total payout depend.

Experts emphasize that not the entire pension is multiplied, but only its «earned» part. Therefore, expectations of a 12.1% increase from the total amount often do not match reality.

March Pension Indexation: Why the Actual Amount May Not Change

Indexation does not always yield significant results due to a number of factors. In particular, the increase may be «absorbed» by a supplement to the minimum pension or limited by a ceiling set by the government.

The most common reasons for a lack of increase:

  • indexation reduces the supplement to the minimum pension, while the total amount remains unchanged;
  • possible reduction or loss of age supplements after exceeding the maximum pension limit;
  • the maximum supplement during indexation is capped at 1,500 hryvnias;
  • instead of a percentage increase, a fixed supplement of about 100–135 hryvnias is applied;
  • increased pensions may affect the amount of subsidies and reduce them.

At the same time, for pensioners with a large insurance experience, indexation may be more beneficial as the recalculation of the main part of the pension also affects the supplements for excess years of service.

Recall that a massive overhaul of the pension system is planned in Ukraine, designed for 13 years.
