A Historic First: India's Private Sector Reaches Orbit
On July 20 at 2:00 PM, the Indian private company Skyroot Aerospace launched its Vikram-1 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. This mission marked a milestone as the Vikram-1 became the first orbital launch vehicle entirely developed by a private Indian manufacturer. The test flight was a success, representing India's first-ever private orbital launch.
The Vikram-1 rocket can deliver payloads of up to 350 kilograms to low Earth orbit. Its cargo included several unique items:
- A lab-grown diamond,
- Robotic arms designed for space debris removal,
- An 18-karat miniature gold rocket.
Inside the gold rocket were tiny sculptures of prominent Indian scientists: Vikram Sarabhai, C. V. Raman, and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
Pavan Goenka, head of the government's Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighted the achievement's significance for the nation. India's Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, commented:

This launch was made possible by reforms introduced in 2020 that opened the space sector to private players. Today, India's space economy is valued at roughly $8.4 billion, with over 400 space startups operating in the country. This success underscores the growing role of the private sector in advancing India's space technologies, which is set to further shape the nation's space program.
Skyroot Aerospace celebrated its achievement with the statement: “Hello space, we have arrived!” This launch unlocks new opportunities for Indian private companies in the space industry and showcases their potential on the global stage.
The Vikram-1 launch demonstrates India's significant progress in space technology, particularly amid the increasing involvement of the private sector.
