Historic Milestone: India’s Private Sector Reaches Orbit on First Attempt
On July 20, the Indian private company Skyroot Aerospace launched its Vikram-1 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. This event marked a significant breakthrough, as Vikram-1 is the first orbital launch vehicle developed entirely by a private Indian manufacturer. The flight was a success, making it the first private orbital launch in India’s history.
Standing roughly as tall as a seven-story building, the Vikram-1 rocket can carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms to low Earth orbit. Its cargo included several unique items:
- a lab-grown diamond;
- robotic arms designed for space debris removal;
- a miniature 18-karat gold rocket.
The gold rocket featured engravings of scientists Vikram Sarabhai and C. V. Raman, as well as former Indian President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
Pawan Goenka, head of the government-affiliated Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre, stated that the outcome exceeded all expectations for a first orbital launch by a private Indian company. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, described the event as a defining moment in the country’s space history.

It is worth noting that India opened its space sector to private players in 2020, which accelerated industry growth. Today, the country hosts over 400 space startups, and India’s space economy is valued at approximately $8.4 billion. This launch highlights the rapid progress of the private sector in India’s space industry and opens up fresh opportunities for future missions.
The successful Vikram-1 launch not only represents a private sector achievement for India but also reflects growing interest and investment in the nation’s space industry.
