Gianni Infantino Declares Candidacy for FIFA Presidency

During the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Canada, Gianni Infantino, the head of the global football governing body, announced his intention to run for president in the 2027 election. The vote is scheduled for May 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco. Addressing representatives from all 211 FIFA member associations, Infantino expressed gratitude for their support over the past decade. This announcement comes as no surprise, as Infantino has held the presidency since 2016, when he succeeded Sepp Blatter, and was re-elected in both 2019 and 2023.

Congress Incident Sparks Tensions

A separate FIFA extraordinary congress, to be held virtually on November 23, 2026, will decide the hosts for the 2031 and 2035 Women's World Cups. During the Vancouver congress, a notable incident occurred involving Jibril Rajoub, president of the Palestinian Football Association. Rajoub refused to shake hands with an Israeli delegate and walked off the stage, explaining that he would not extend such a gesture to a representative of a government he accused of committing genocide. He also announced plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding FIFA's decision not to suspend Israel's national team and clubs from international competitions.

“I have no intention of shaking the hand of a representative from a government that is committing genocide.”

Infantino's bid for a fourth term underscores his ambition to continue leading FIFA through an era marked by significant political challenges in international sports. The incident with Rajoub highlights how geopolitical conflicts increasingly spill into the sporting arena, forcing organizations like FIFA to navigate a delicate balance between athletic integrity and political pressures. The outcome of the 2027 election will be crucial for the future direction of the organization.

As FIFA gears up for the upcoming presidential election, the venue for the crucial 77th Congress has been confirmed to take place in Rabat. This event will not only serve as a backdrop for Infantino's candidacy but will also unveil the hosts for the next two Women's World Cups, highlighting the ongoing intersection of sports and global politics.
