New Device Targets Mosquitoes with Smart Tech

Engineer Steven Cheng has created a groundbreaking device that merges artificial intelligence with a laser cannon to take down mosquitoes. The four-month project drew on his expertise in computer vision and robotics. The system spots and zaps the insects using cutting-edge technology.

To train the AI, Cheng used a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera fitted with a high-magnification lens, capturing thousands of images of mosquitoes from various angles. A deep learning model was then fine-tuned to identify mosquitoes with near-perfect accuracy, even when other objects are present in the room. Once the camera detects movement, the AI confirms the target, and servo motors aim the laser cannon at the insect. A single laser shot instantly incinerates the pest mid-flight.
