Iran Launches Drone Strike on Azerbaijan, Damaging Airport and Injuring Civilians

Іран завдає удару дронів по Азербайджану: постраждали цивільні особи та аеропорт.

Iranian Drone Attack Targets Azerbaijan

On March 5, Iran conducted a drone strike on Azerbaijani territory, damaging the Nakhchivan International Airport and injuring two civilians. The morning attack involved two drones: one struck the airport terminal, causing a fire, while the other crashed near a rural school in the village of Shekerabad. This incident marks a significant escalation in cross-border tensions between the two neighboring states.

Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned Iran's actions, accusing it of a gross violation of international law and deliberate escalation. A ministry representative stated:

"We resolutely condemn these drone attacks carried out from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which resulted in damage to the airport building and injuries to two civilians."

According to the statement, Iran's ambassador to Azerbaijan was summoned to the Foreign Ministry to provide explanations and receive a formal protest note.

Military Response and Regional Tensions

Furthermore, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Defense announced preparations for military measures to protect national sovereignty. Specialists are also examining the technical parameters of the downed Iranian drones to analyze the attack's potential implications. This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional tension, following the launch of a military campaign against Iran by the United States and Israel on February 28, which involved hundreds of strikes. Those actions resulted in the elimination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and key commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Azerbaijan demands that Iran take urgent steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's statement also declared:

"We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran promptly clarify the aforementioned issue, provide explanations, and take the necessary and urgent measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents in the future."

This event underscores the growing friction between Iran and Azerbaijan amid escalating regional conflicts fueled by international involvement. In response to the Iranian attacks, Azerbaijan is actively working to strengthen its defensive capabilities and pursuing diplomatic measures to ensure the security of its citizens. The situation has the potential to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus, given the involvement of other external powers in the broader conflict.
